A Peek into the Speech and Debate ExperienceBy: Devin
In addition, in past years, they’ve done informal debates, with more freestyle topics, like Disney+ vs. Netflix. This debate was highlighted by multiple members, and Avery (11th) described the debate as, “very interesting and informational as we saw each team's points and decided which side had the better points.” Another topic emphasized by members was Do Wealthy Nations have an obligation to give financial aid to third-world countries, stating that it was a Lincoln-Douglass Debate and demonstrated how to make rebuttals on the spot. Speech and Debate members say that the club has advanced their skill set beyond speech and debate itself. Multiple students accentuate the fact that the club has developed their quick-thinking skills, which allows them to expand their speaking abilities. Gabriel (7th) explained how, “researching and finding accurate sources to use in and out of debates,” has been a helpful tool to learn, as it helps him in his other classes. Avery (11th) mentioned it has helped her to gain confidence as she states, “I still have a lot of ways that I can improve these skills but expressing something you're passionate in, and just performing in front of others has challenged me and helped me gain confidence in myself.” Another element that students and club sponsors pointed out, was the factor of responsibility and always being prepared. Overall, all students reported nothing but fantastic experiences while being with the club. Kaydence (11th) even said the club helped her spot her interest in debate as she said, “It's been nice finding a debate community within school. I've realized how much I enjoy debate; it's a really thrilling experience.” Currently, the club is beginning a new unit of speech, as Katharin (11th) expresses, “I'm really excited to see what the future holds, especially as we start to dive into speech!” The Speech and Debate Club isn't stopping there, as they strive to make further improvements to the club. The club sponsors’ vision is to move forward into the competition scene, as they feel that the club is well-prepared and ready for the challenge coming Fall of 2023. The club does hope to gain more members, as Ford (10th) says, “More people should join debate club, its a lot of fun and I think a lot of people in LANV would love it.” All in all, the LANV Speech and Debate Club offers great potential and opportunity to students to explore a club they love, and contributes to building an amazing community at LANV.

By: Rhys For a school that has no sports, and almost all the extra curricular activities are online, the hiking club is the club you want to be in if you enjoy the outdoors, want to get your blood moving, fresh air, and overall just enjoy nature. In Nevada there are so many beautiful places close to us and even just a half hour drive away.
This past month I was able to attend a meeting of the Hiking Club. Over the course of this meeting they discussed when they would meet, what hike would take place, and how often they would go on these hikes. The club tries to go on one hike a month. Principle Richardson is the leader of the Hiking Club, He is the perfect person to have this position as he has had experience with hiking in the past, and is a fun hiker and also good at it. As I’ve mentioned I showed up to a meeting, and saw how little people there were, and I was very surprised because hiking is very popular, especially in America. I was recently asked by one of the student success specialists, Mrs. Beck. “Are you going to hike on Saturday?” They need more people so if you have thought of joining you definitely should join. I am thinking about joining the hiking club. It looks like so much fun and is honestly one of the most underrated clubs here at LANV. Some hikes they have done is Lone Mountain, and Red Rock I have also done these hikes, they are also planning some at Mount Charleston if you want to get into that cool mountain air. The earth is a beautiful place, these hikes are an opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors with your teachers, friends, and classmates. Invite all to come to the hiking club, it’s great exercise and makes you a happier person overall. “Your body is always up for it, you need to convince your mind.” -Andrew Murphy Why Students Like You Should Join the Creative Writing Club!By: Maya Poets, Essayists, Novelists… These are the people who make up P.E.N., Leadership Academy’s very own Creative Writing Club!

Behind the Scenes of Homecoming Royalty By: Mary R.
Kings and Queens, Princes and Princesses, and the Courts, we put our votes in for the homecoming Royals at LANV. At the beginning of the year, the student body put the nominations in for who we wanted to see at “Under the Sea” homecoming. Then, the poll came out to vote for who we wanted to see crowned and sashed. Finally, most of the students, mentors, and staff went to homecoming and watched the winners be crowned, but there are a couple questions on how the event and the election came to life. Who is behind the election? Who runs homecoming? Is this a popularity vote or is it a fair running ground? Do we need more advertisement? Songs that LANV students listen to and enjoy.By: Delaney LANV students listen to a wide variety of music and songs. Each student enjoys different genres, songs and artists. We’ve sent out a poll and gotten the results telling us the music they enjoy, in our poll we asked the students what songs come to mind with the categories of favorite songs, nostalgic songs, energizing songs, and their least favorite songs. We will not only see how different the songs are but how similar they are too!

As students of LANV, leadership is a very common topic in classes, but that doesn’t mean it’s the easiest subject to grasp. Leadership is a very abstract concept, so sometimes the meaning gets lost in how we talk about it. Creating principled leaders is LANV’s mission, but what does it really mean to be a leader, and how can you improve your leadership skills?

Nevada is a vast state with a lot of different places and attributes that are special to the state. With so many places, this article aims to narrow down the places our LANV students, staff, and mentors think are the best in Nevada, whether that be Northern, Southern, or somewhere in between. Though we cannot go everywhere in Nevada, we have a wide range of people that live in and near all kinds of places, such as Red Rock or Lake Tahoe.

Did you know that LANV doesn’t have any sports teams? However, you’d be surprised by how many LANV students play sports. Some participate in sports through a nearby school, and others compete individually. I interviewed five of these talented students, and now I get to introduce them to you.

The first raffle month we had was September. The topic for the September raffle was Inspiration, and we got a lot of great responses from students. Nevin (10th), Logan (9th), and Ryder (7th) did a form of art. Samara (10th), Isabel (12th), and Katherine (7th), all made up their own poetry. Other people did slideshows, some people put just their thoughts in the discussion. The raffle is a great and fun thing for all students to participate in and show cool talents and poetry.

The senior capstone is by far the most complicated assignment you will complete in your years of high school. It takes so much time and effort to complete even one section. There are four sections, so the amount of work you have to do is not comparable to anything you have done before. Even though it is full of hard work, it is still something that will benefit you.
