By: Coleman Students at LANV take the GeoScience course in grade 11 and end up learning about things from stars and volcanoes exploding to why that one rock has some lines in it. This article will delve into the makings of the course, and learn how Mrs. Somma teaches such a wide subject in a relatively short amount of time. Mrs. Somma is the Geoscience teacher at LANV, and in an interview with her, she described how she especially liked Geoscience because it helps connect everything in the universe, and explain those connections. Even if some of them are just theories, they are all backed up by some form of evidence. This is also Mrs. Somma’s second year teaching the class, and she has taken strides to better the class by balancing the homework loads, along with making sure each assignment is as effective as it can be. She advocates hands-on and personal assignments a lot, which is a lot of what students like about the class and is what makes the class stand out, because in this class it is especially important to get hands-on experience, considering we are all living on top of the topic that we are learning about. Though the class has been improved upon, she says she will continue to refine the class and make it the best that she can.
assignments because it helps them understand while also making it fun and different every time. Both sides also mentioned how they enjoyed learning about the earth because they feel more connected to it as they learned about it which made them care about it more. As Mrs. Somma stated, you can’t care about something about something you don’t know about. Though the class may have some issues, it is still fairly new and is being improved upon as it reaches the issues so that it can continue to be better each time it’s taught. Even despite issues, it is a very memorable class for many because of the way it’s formatted and its engaging assignments. Overall people like the class, and it will only continue to be more liked as it gets perfected.
