Have you ever wanted to know a little bit more about your mentors and how they got to the place they did? Read about our math mentors and their experiences from early childhood to becoming part of the community at LANV. Discover some of their biggest challenges and rewards when it comes to teaching, and get to know them better overall!

She admires the qualities of LANV as she says, ”It's the best school! The students are AMAZING! The staff is awesome. There is such a great feeling of community and kindness. There is no place I would rather teach.” Throughout her time at LANV, she has also had the opportunity to work with the music club here. Each math mentor was asked a series of questions. Here are some of Mrs. Hammond’s fantastic responses! What’s the best piece of advice you have gotten as a teacher?

Mr. Newman also believes teachers should strive to invoke confidence in their students. He always wanted a profession where he was able to serve others, but was still connected to one of his passions and found himself at LANV. This will be his third year at LANV, and he believes that LANV is helping to create principled leaders. He wants to participate in shaping students that demonstrate responsible and self-governing character, and to assist in creating an engaging learning environment. Underwood has that same passion for mathematics as his high school teacher did as he claims, “I think seeing the light bulb go off when a student understands a math concept is one of the most rewarding things in life.” He also sees that math evokes critical thinking skills, which is why he finds educating so gratifying.
In 2021, he applied to become a mentor at LANV and knew it would be the right fit for him as they made him teach a class as part of the interview, and he saw that LANV wanted mentors that were exceptional at educating and spreading knowledge rather than just being specialized on the subject. Ever since he has been working with LANV to help students master mathematics and to evoke engagement and excitement in the learning environment. He also helps to coach the robotics program at LANV as he states, “It is so fun to build something from scratch and use mathematics to make it move and compete!” Each math mentor was asked a series of questions. Our math mentors spread their love for knowledge through the classes they teach. They all help us through the difficulties of math, rooting for our success, and are helping to create principal leaders through their gift for mathematics.
